Black soldier fly breeding tent

Black soldier fly breeding tent

from $80.00

The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) is a tropical insect that requires very warm temperatures to thrive. In colder climates this is not possible during various times of the year. We have created this compact indoor table top version so that anyone (beginner to expert), can now cultivate black soldier fly larvae anywhere, all year around. This tent can be purchased with or without the PVC frame. You can make the frame yourself and save, the instructions to build the frame will come with the tent. This tent is washable and reusable. Black Soldier Fly (bsf) breeding tent

The bsf breeding tent was created to make it possible to create a year around enviroment to proliferate black soldier fly. It is a compact, table top version made to fit into a small space or to allow multiple units to be used in a limited space area.

Why on a table top? For optimal temperature. In cold weather, if the tent sits on the floor, the tempurature difference from top to bottom can vary. From experience I found if the flies landed on the cold floor they did not do much after that.

Why a verticle tent instead of more horizontal? With the 50 watt bsf breeding light the area of good light for mating enticement is 36”x36”x36”. The fly area in our tent is within this area. Longer tents need more lighting. Also, this is to save space and to be able to run more tents at different stages of mating.

This setup is lightweight, easy zipper access and has a cinch tight bottom to keep the flies in and for easy clean up to restart.

How to set up your breeding tent:

First you want a room that is 81 degrees fahrenheit +-2, 50% humidity.

Position your breeding light 4-6 inches above the center of your tent (optimal), you can also mount it to the wall above the top corner of the tent. You can find bsf breeding lights here.

Assemble the frame and drape the tent half way over the frame. Then place the frame on the table (if you are going to use a table).

Now add any items to the center of the frame that may be too large to go through the zipper.

Finish pulling the tent over the frame and cinch it tight. Now add the pupa.

You can add the attractant, moisture to the sponge and egg blocks once you start seeing flies hatching in the tent
